Born on the sunny, surf-filled shores of Okinawa with an opera singer for a mother, Japanese singer-songwriter Kiwako Ashimine had a less than normal upbringing, and this shines through in her sound too. A DIY musician who has experimented with genres such as lo-Fi and R&B to folk and dark pop, her clean, piercing vocals have the ability to command the attention of even the largest room. We spoke to Kiwako about her musical philosophy, and where that unique resolve we hear threaded through her works come from.
