yun2x is an independent artist in the indiepop, antipop, and hyperpop music space. He is a one man army, handling everything from production, mixing, and mastering to video editing and graphic design himself. Citing artists such as Aries and keshi as inspiration, stumbling across music production and song breakdown videos on YouTube was his original spark to make music. Blending electronic, vibrant synths with soft acoustic sounds, he crafts songs that scream melancholy and nostalgia, yet present in a way that feels energetic and exciting. With lyrics telling stories of yearning and heartbreak, he has created a discography that is easy to relate to.

Though still moving at a small scale, he is on the rise with a gradual increase in popularity. With his first album in development and set to release in the coming months, yun2x is a promising new talent to keep an eye on.

3 words to describe you:
Imaginative, Dreamer, Introvert

Describe your sound:
My sound is built off of a blend of indie pop, hyperpop, anti pop, and alternative rnb. I'd definitely describe it as moody, nostalgic, somber, and electric.

Tell us about you early music memories and the moment you knew you wanted to pursue music:
It's kind of funny because most of the reasons I started making music came from watching YouTube. It first started when I came across Aries' video where he recreated Magnolia by Playboi Carti in like 2 minutes. That video got me interested in making beats. Then, later on I found keshi's video breaking down how he made his song 2 Soon, which inspired me to start writing over my production and made me want to start singing.

How does your heritage impact your art?
I wouldn't say my heritage as a American born Chinese necessarily has any major influence on my art or music creation. But I will say that being Asian led me to connect with artists who were also Asian, such as keshi and Joji who had a big influence on my sound. And while the fact of being Chinese alone doesn't really play into my work, one cool thing I took from my heritage is that my alias "yun2x" comes from my Chinese name "Kai Yun."

What moment are you most proud of in your music journey so far?
In terms of milestones and achievements, I'm still pretty small and fresh as an artist, so not too much has happened yet, as I still have a long ways to go. But as of recent I just hit my first 1k streams on a song, so I'd say that's the accomplishment that I'm most proud of. But overall, I think that the biggest thing I'm proud of is making the decision to fully commit to trying to make a life and career out of my music and art. There's a lot of times where I've been uncertain about the direction of my life, questioning whether or not I'm just wasting my time on a pipe dream. So to have the courage and guts to keep pursuing something many would give up on is something I will always be proud of.

Your next music goal:
My next music goal is to finish and release my first album.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who and why?
I'd definitely want to work with either Aries or keshi since they both mean so much in my story and development as an artist.

A song that has shaped you:
One song that really shaped me as a person and an artist is "Icon" by Jaden Smith. I used to spam that song like everyday in high school. I think just the vibe and energy of the song made me feel like I could do anything, like I had the world in the palm of my hands. It's something that I can go back and listen to when I need to hype myself up if I'm feeling unmotivated or uninspired.

3 songs you're listening to right now:
oh yeah? - Steve Lacy
Hurt - 2hollis
The Peace - underscores

Your community shout out:
An artist I'd love to shoutout is Tiffany Day (@tiffdidwhat). She's an artist that I've discovered and really enjoyed within the last year or two. The reason I want to give her a shoutout is because of her story. Hearing her talk about how she was struggling and feeling like her music career was over, but deciding to make one last push with her album HALO which lead to her recent rise in success was really inspiring for me. It gave me hope that even if things aren't really moving right now, if I keep pushing forward anything can happen. As corny as it sounds, it showed me that the only time it's truly is over is the minute I give up.

Anything else you'd like to share:
As of August 14th, I have a new single out called "fall apart." I had a lot of fun with the production of it and it's one of my favorite songs that I've made so far. Also, for this song I'm working on making a music video for the first time. And lastly, I'm working hard to finish up the rest of the songs for my first album, which I plan to release in the coming months.
